What to Gift a Foodie: Gourmet Seafood Gift Pack
Complete guide to choosing the perfect gastronomic gift: from artisanal preserves to caviar, including top-quality Cantabrian anchovies. For birthdays, Christmas, corporate gifts, or any occasion that deserves something exceptional.
Why a gourmet gift always hits the mark
Some gifts are forgotten before the wrapping paper is off. And some gifts spark conversation, discovery, a memorable dinner. A gourmet seafood gift pack belongs to the latter category.
The problem with most gifts is that they try to please everyone and end up with no personality. A standard bottle of wine, a supermarket box of chocolates, an impersonal gift card. Functional, yes. Memorable, no.
Gifting artisanal seafood is different. You are giving the work of master canners who have spent generations perfecting their craft. You are giving a product with traceable origin, with history, with a flavor not found on any store shelf. And above all, you are showing that you know the person: that you know they enjoy good food, appreciate quality, and prefer authenticity over appearance.
At Bacalalo, we have been selecting the best seafood products at the Mercat del Ninot in Barcelona since 1990. What we have learned in over three decades is that a good gastronomic gift doesn't need to be expensive: it needs to be honest. And that starts with the product.
Types of foodies and what to gift each one
Not all food lovers are the same. Before choosing a gift pack, it's worth thinking about what type of foodie you're dealing with. Here are the most common profiles and what really excites them:
The gastronomic explorer
They love discovering new products, trying unfamiliar flavors, comparing origins and varieties. For this profile, the ideal is a pack that combines several gourmet preserves of different types: a can of tuna belly, some premium anchovies, a sea urchin pâté, artisanal pickled mussels. Variety is key.
The product purist
Prefers fewer products but of the highest quality. They don't want five decent cans: they want one that is extraordinary. For this profile, a box of Cantabrian 00 anchovies or a jar of premium caviar is the perfect gift. Quality over quantity, always.
The home cook
They enjoy cooking and are looking for ingredients that elevate their dishes. Versatile products work well here: top-quality desalted cod, various fish roes, premium preserving oils. Products that inspire recipes and that they won't find in their usual store.
The social sybarite
Enjoys sharing. Organizes dinners, aperitifs, informal tastings. For this profile, generous packs that allow for creating a seafood platter are ideal: anchovies, assorted preserves, caviar to spread on blinis, roe on toast. Anything that sparks conversation around a table.
The executive or important client
When the gift is professional, you need something that conveys discernment without seeming excessive. Packs with careful presentation, recognizable high-end products, and a touch of exclusivity (like caviar or maximum-grade anchovies) communicate exactly what you want: respect, good taste, and attention to detail.
Gift pack comparison by price
For a clear reference before you decide, here's a comparison of what you can expect in each price range:
| Price Range | What it includes | Ideal for | Occasion |
|---|---|---|---|
| €30 - €50 | 2-3 artisanal preserves (anchovies, mussels, tuna belly) in a gift box | Friends, co-workers, gourmet secret Santa | Birthday, Christmas, thank you |
| €50 - €80 | Pack of premium Cantabrian anchovies (large or double format) + select preserve | Family, partner, regular client | Anniversaries, Father's/Mother's Day, project completion |
| €80 - €150 | Combination of 00 anchovies + caviar (30g) + 2 premium preserves. Special presentation | VIP corporate gifts, important celebrations | Corporate Christmas, weddings, retirements |
| €150 + | Complete selection: premium caviar (50g+), large format anchovies, select preserves, cod. Luxury pack | Strategic clients, unique celebrations | Year-end, exclusive events, institutional gifts |
Each range makes sense depending on the context. It's not about spending more, but about hitting the mark with what the person will value. A true foodie might be more excited by perfectly selected €45 anchovies than by a €200 basket full of generic products.

Cantabrian Anchovies: The gift no one forgets
If we had to choose just one product to gift a foodie, it would be good Cantabrian anchovies. And we don't say that lightly: it's the product that generates the most reactions. Whoever receives a can of top-quality 00 anchovies and tries it will never look at supermarket anchovies the same way again.
What makes premium anchovies special?
- The size: 00 anchovies are the largest, with thick, meaty, and melt-in-your-mouth fillets. The difference from a standard anchovy is abysmal.
- The maturation: A minimum of 12 months in salt, controlling temperature and humidity. No shortcuts. The result is a deep, complex flavor, without bitterness.
- The oil: Extra virgin olive oil that complements without overpowering. No sunflower oil.
- The origin: Cantabrian coast, with full traceability from the fish market to the can.
If you want to understand why 00 anchovies cost what they do (and why they are worth every penny), we recommend reading our guide to 00 anchovies and our article on how to recognize quality in Cantabrian anchovies.
For gifting: A large can of Cantabrian anchovies in a 10-14 fillet format is enough for two people and has an impeccable presentation. If you want to go further, combine it with some artisanal breadsticks or quality butter.
Caviar: When the gift needs to impress
Caviar remains the gastronomic product with the greatest capacity for surprise. Even people who eat well regularly rarely have caviar at home. Gifting it is offering an experience that, in all likelihood, they wouldn't give themselves.
And here's an important point: not all caviar is the same, and price doesn't always reflect real quality. There is European aquaculture caviar with an extraordinary quality-price ratio, and there is very expensive caviar that doesn't justify the difference. The key is knowing how to choose.
What we recommend for gifting:
- 30g format: Perfect for an experience for two. Enough to taste calmly, on blinis or toast, with neither too much nor too little. Range: €40-€80.
- 50g format: For a dinner or celebration with 3-4 people. Allows for serving several rounds and enjoying it as a central appetizer. Range: €60-€120.
- 125g+ format: For events, special dinners, or high-level corporate gifts. Range: €120-€300.
If the person receiving the gift has no experience with caviar, including a note on how to serve it (temperature, accompaniments, non-metallic spoon) makes the difference between an expensive gift and a memorable one.

Gourmet preserves: Variety and sophistication
Gourmet preserves are probably the most versatile gastronomic gift there is. They combine several advantages that make them ideal for gifting:
- No refrigeration needed: They can be transported, sent by courier, and stored without a cold chain.
- Long shelf life: Most quality preserves have a shelf life of 3 to 5 years (and many improve with age, like wine).
- Attractive presentation: Artisanal canneries pay as much attention to the design of their tins as to their contents. They are visually appealing.
- Infinite variety: From tuna belly to queen scallops, including sardines, mussels, razor clams, octopus, cockles...
A pack of assorted gourmet preserves allows you to set up a spectacular appetizer board in five minutes. You open three or four cans, serve them in their own tins or on a nice plate, add quality bread, and you have a restaurant-quality appetizer at home.

Which pack to choose according to the occasion
Each occasion calls for a different type of gift. Here's our quick guide by occasion:
Birthdays
A birthday is personal, so the gift should reflect that you know the person. If you know they like anchovies, go big: a generous format of premium anchovies. If you're not sure of their exact preferences, a varied pack of gourmet preserves is the safest option and always works.
Christmas and holidays
The time of year when the most gourmet gifts are given. The advantage of a seafood gift pack at Christmas is that it fits perfectly with festive meals and dinners. Anchovies for Christmas Eve aperitif, caviar for the New Year's toast. It's not a gift that sits in a drawer: it's enjoyed immediately.
Corporate gifts
Here, the key is presentation and perceived quality. A pack with caviar and premium anchovies in a gift box conveys exactly what a company wants to communicate: discernment, exclusivity, and attention. For orders of more than 5 units, we offer special conditions for companies. Write to us at info@bacalalo.com.
Anniversaries and celebrations
For a couple or an intimate celebration, 30-50g caviar is perfect. It becomes the centerpiece of a special dinner without the need for complex cooking. Accompanied by cava or champagne, it's an experience to remember.
Professional appreciation
A pack in the €40-€60 range of selected artisanal preserves is ideal. Special enough to show intention, without being excessive. Perfect for thanking a collaborator, a supplier, or a mentor.
Why an artisanal product surpasses any generic basket
Let's be direct: generic gift baskets sold in large stores have a fundamental problem. They are designed to look generous, not to offer real quality. Lots of volume, lots of decorative filler, and mid-to-low-range products you could buy at any supermarket.
An artisanal gourmet gift pack works in reverse: fewer products, but each one selected with discernment. This is what makes the difference:
- Traceability: You know where each product comes from, who made it, and with what raw material. It's not a generic label: there's a story behind it.
- Real flavor: An artisanal pickled mussel and an industrial one are nothing alike. The difference is noticeable from the first bite.
- Natural exclusivity: Artisanal products have limited productions. You don't find them on every corner. That automatically makes the gift more special.
- Honesty: No filler, no decorative straw, no second-rate products to bulk up the basket. Everything inside deserves to be there.
At Bacalalo, we work directly with canneries from the Cantabrian coast and European caviar producers. Every product we offer has passed our own selection. We don't sell anything we wouldn't put on our own table. It's a simple principle, but surprisingly rare in the sector.
When you give one of our packs, you're not just giving a brand: you're giving the expertise of over 30 years of choosing the best seafood products.
Frequently asked questions
Do you offer refrigerated shipping for fresh products?
Yes. Products that require a cold chain (such as desalted cod or caviar) are shipped in isothermal packaging with refrigerated gel packs. Shipping is carried out within 24-48 hours to ensure the product arrives in optimal conditions. Preserves, as they do not require refrigeration, are shipped in standard protective packaging.
Can I customize the gift pack?
Of course. If the predefined packs don't fit what you're looking for, write to us at info@bacalalo.com or call us. We'll help you assemble a custom pack with the products and budget you have in mind. For corporate orders, we can also include a personalized card with your company's message or logo.
How long do gourmet preserves last?
Most quality preserves have a best-before date of 3 to 5 years from their production. But there's a surprising fact: many artisanal preserves (especially oil-packed fish preserves) improve with age, just like wine. The flavors integrate, and the result is more rounded. So there's no rush: they can be stored calmly.
Can I send the gift directly to another person?
Yes, this is one of the most requested options. At checkout, you can specify a shipping address different from the billing address. If you want us to include a personalized message, indicate it in the order notes. We'll make sure it arrives with the appropriate presentation.
What does the gift presentation include?
Gift packs come in a box specifically designed for the occasion, with the products protected and attractively presented. We don't use unnecessary filler: the box is sized so the products fit well and are visible when opened. It's a gift that delights the eyes before it delights the palate.
Do you offer special prices for corporate gifts?
Yes. For orders of 5 or more packs, we offer special conditions. We can adapt the content of the pack, include corporate materials, and manage shipments to multiple addresses. Contact us at info@bacalalo.com indicating the approximate quantity and budget per pack.
How long does delivery take?
We ship within 24-48 working hours throughout the peninsula. For the Balearic and Canary Islands, the delivery time is 3-5 working days. If you need the gift by a specific date, please indicate it when placing your order, and we will prioritize it.
Does caviar require any special care?
Caviar must be kept refrigerated between 0 °C and 4 °C at all times. That's why we send it with isothermal packaging. Once received, it should be stored in the coldest part of the refrigerator (usually the bottom shelf). Once opened, consume within 2-3 days maximum. To serve it correctly, remove it from the refrigerator 10 minutes before and use a mother-of-pearl, bone, or plastic spoon (never metal, which alters the taste).
Choose wisely, not in a hurry
If you've made it this far, you probably have a pretty clear idea of what kind of gourmet gift suits the person you want to surprise. Our final advice is simple: choose the product you would want to receive yourself. If seeing it makes you want to keep it, you're on the right track.
At Bacalalo, we don't do aggressive marketing or make empty promises. We've been selling seafood products since 1990 to customers and restaurants who return because the product speaks for itself. And when that product becomes a gift, the effect multiplies: not only do you enjoy it, but you share something truly worthwhile.
