Anchovies for children: benefits, when to introduce, and recipes

Quick Answer: Anchovies can be introduced from 12 months in moderation, and ideally from 3 years due to their high salt content. They provide essential omega-3 for brain development, calcium, protein, and iron. The WHO recommends less than 2g of salt per day for children aged 1-3 years, so servings should be very small (1-2 fillets).

At what age can children eat anchovies?

The Spanish Association of Pediatrics (AEP) allows the introduction of small oily fish (anchovy, sardine, anchovy/boquerón) from 12 months, once the baby has accepted white fish. However, salted anchovies have a nuance: salt.

Practical recommendation:

  • 12 months - 3 years: introduce only very occasionally and in minimal quantities (half a fillet per occasion). Better fresh anchovies or canned sardines without added salt.
  • 3-6 years: 1-2 fillets occasionally, not as a weekly habit.
  • + 6 years: 2-3 fillets in a tapa, up to 1-2 times per week.

Salt: the factor to monitor

The WHO and AEP establish these daily salt limits:

  • 1-3 years: less than 2 g/day.
  • 4-6 years: less than 3 g/day.
  • 7-10 years: less than 5 g/day.

One anchovy fillet provides 0.6 g of salt. For a 2-year-old, this already represents 30% of the daily limit. That's why it's important to:

  • Serve small portions (half a fillet to 1 fillet).
  • Reduce salt in other meals of the day.
  • Consider alternatives such as unsalted canned sardines.

How to introduce them: safe progression

  1. 12-18 months: introduce fresh oily fish first (sardine, fresh anchovy/boquerón). Salted anchovies only very occasionally.
  2. 18-36 months: 1 small fillet crumbled into pasta, omelet, or salad. Once a month.
  3. 3-6 years: 1-2 fillets on whole wheat bread 1-2 times a month as a family tapa.
  4. + 6 years: similar consumption to adults but moderate.

3 family recipes with anchovies

1. Spaghetti with melted anchovy and tomato (≈ 350 kcal per child)

Spaghetti cooked al dente, 1 anchovy fillet melted in a pan with EVOO and garlic, natural crushed tomato without added salt. Serve and sprinkle parsley.

2. French omelet with chopped anchovy (≈ 220 kcal)

2 eggs, half a finely chopped anchovy fillet, parsley. No extra salt (the anchovy is already salty).

3. Family tomato and anchovy bruschetta (≈ 180 kcal per unit)

Toasted whole wheat bread, grated fresh tomato, EVOO, 1 fillet per bruschetta. Easy and nutritious family snack.

Common mistakes

  • "If they eat oily fish, anything goes": false. The salt factor in anchovies is real and needs to be moderated.
  • "I give them 4 fillets to get them to like the taste": too much salt at once. It's better to introduce small and progressive amounts.
  • "Vinegar-marinated anchovies are better than salted ones for children": less salt, yes, but remember that vinegar-marinated anchovies also require prior freezing due to anisakis.
  • "If they don't like it, don't insist": pediatricians recommend exposing to the flavor 8-15 times before ruling it out.
At what age can children eat anchovies?
They can be introduced from 12 months, but due to salt, it's best to do so very occasionally until 3 years of age.
How many anchovies can children eat?
1-3 years: half a fillet occasionally. 3-6 years: 1-2 sporadic fillets. +6 years: 2-3 fillets up to 1-2 times/week.
Are anchovies good for a child's brain?
Yes, omega-3 EPA/DHA contributes to cognitive development, but portions are small. Ideally combine with fresh sardines, salmon, etc.
How much salt can a child have per day?
WHO: less than 2g (1-3 years), 3g (4-6 years), 5g (7-10 years).
Can my 2-year-old eat anchovies on pizza?
Occasionally yes, but pizza already contains a lot of salt. It's better to save it for a less salty preparation.
Do anchovies cause allergies in children?
Oily fish can cause allergies. If it's the first time, introduce in small quantities and observe for 48 hours.
Vinegar-marinated anchovies for children?
Yes, from 3 years old, always purchased (not homemade) with guaranteed prior freezing. Avoid for younger children.
What oily fish is best for small children?>
Fresh sardines and boquerones, salmon in moderate portions. Salted anchovies are better from 3 years old due to salt.
